Changes to repeat prescribing

A new initiative across the South Devon and Torbay area is designed to reduce waste, and improve safety and efficiency by reducing the amount of wasted medication which is dispensed to patients and not used. To avoid this waste, your doctor would like to ensure that only what you actually need is ordered. Devon Square Surgery requires you, the patient, or your carer to order your prescriptions yourself directly with the surgery. Previously, a community pharmacy (For example: Day Lewis, Boots, Superdrug and so on) may have been doing this on your behalf.

What do you need to do?

You (or your friend, relative or carers) need to order the repeat medications 7 – 10 days before you are due to run out to ensure the repeat medication process can be completed. Please avoid ordering any earlier or later than this.

The simplest way to order the repeat medications you require is via Devon Square Surgery’s secure online ordering system – ‘SystmOnline’. This online system will also allow you to book and cancel appointments and much more.

You can set up your account via our website – click on the big green stethoscope icon and ‘Request access to Online Services at Devon Square Surgery’. Alternatively   call us on 01626 332182 or pop into the surgery and our friendly Reception Team will support you in setting up an account. Don’t worry if you don’t use a computer - your repeat prescription slips can still be posted or handed in to the Surgery.

The practice will no longer accept repeat medication requests via a pharmacy from 1st September 2017. This includes all pharmacies, including community pharmacies or online pharmacies; or companies who order appliances for you (called appliance contractors).

All patients registered with Devon Square Surgery can choose any pharmacy to dispense their medicines. An explanation of the repeat medication process can be found on our website – , this process applies regardless of the pharmacy that you use.

Did you know that GPs always sign every request for repeat medication individually? This is a vital part of the process and legally required.

When will these changes take place?

These changes take place with effect from 1st September 2017. You need to make sure that you do not rely on a pharmacy to order your medication for you after this date.

This change is supported by South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group, who have responsibility for the majority of healthcare in this area.

If you would like any more information on this process, please contact the Patient Experience Team.
